The Journey of Children Across America
In 2007, amidst the quiet streets of Milford, Massachusetts, a small group of six individuals gathered with a singular vision: to uplift underserved children in their community. Little did they know, this humble beginning would burgeon into Children Across America (CAA), a beacon of hope and support for countless families over the years.
At the helm of this journey was Ray Fellows, the visionary Executive Director whose grandmother’s inspiration and financial support paved the way for the organization’s inception. Armed with determination and a heart for change, Ray navigated the bureaucratic landscape, securing CAA’s 501C3 designation with the IRS in the same year of its founding.
The journey began with a clear focus on education, as Ray collaborated with Milford School Superintendent Bob Tremblay to identify the pressing needs within the community. Thus, CAA’s mission to empower children through literacy and math programs was born.
As the years unfolded, CAA’s impact rippled across Milford, leaving a trail of transformative initiatives in its wake. From the establishment of the Summer Reading and Math Club to the introduction of the Strong N Fit exercise program, CAA became a cornerstone of educational enrichment and holistic wellness for children.
However, CAA’s journey was not without its challenges. Fluctuations in enrollment and the evolving needs of the community demanded adaptability and resilience. Yet, through unwavering dedication and strategic partnerships, CAA persevered, securing sponsorships from entities like the Blue Cross/Blue Shield Foundation and forging alliances with healthcare providers to ensure access to essential services.
The spirit of community engagement pulsated through every facet of CAA’s work, from the annual Pumpkin Stroll to the Christmas gift giveaway, which reached its zenith in 2016 with the distribution of 100 presents to local children in need. Even amidst the trials of the COVID-19 pandemic, CAA pivoted seamlessly, transitioning its operations online to continue serving its mission.
One of CAA’s most notable achievements was the establishment of the STREAM Club, addressing the critical need for literacy enhancement in the community. Moreover, initiatives like Girls Love to Code underscored CAA’s commitment to fostering inclusivity and gender equity in STEM fields.
As CAA continues to navigate the ever-changing landscape of community service, its core values remain unwavering. Healthcare support, sponsorship and support from philanthropic organizations, and essential programs like car safety initiatives and backpack giveaways stand as testaments to CAA’s enduring commitment to the well-being of Milford’s children.
Indeed, the journey of Children Across America is a testament to the power of grassroots activism and the transformative impact of collective action. From humble beginnings to a multifaceted organization touching the lives of countless families, CAA’s story serves as an inspiration to communities everywhere, proving that with passion, perseverance, and a shared vision, positive change is not only possible but inevitable.
Together we can build a brighter future for generations to come!
